Every family is different.

Every person is different.

Every worker, locality and time period is different.

Therefore, what is the purpose of looking at a Two-by-Two childhood?

Maybe none.

But it is worthy of note that nearly every person raised as a Two-by-Two, mentions the same kinds of feelings and experiences. The Two-by-Two system has changed somewhat since it first began in 1897.

Therefore, care must be taken against the obvious fallacy of saying this is how it is, was or will always be.

I received the following transcript of Howard Mooney’s

presentation to an Elders’ meeting held in 1960.

In my day among the 2x2s I never heard anything about Elders’ meetings,

and certainly the common member

was never told what goes on in such meetings – so this transcript is very interesting to me.

From it, I now understand that Elders’ meetings are not held between Elders alone. They are called together and attended by Workers who then speak to a group of Elders as their overseers. And that causes me to wonder whether Elders can or ever do call their own Elders meetings where there are no Workers invited.

If it's not a love letter, it's a hate letter!

I can give you good examples of how this Black or White thing works.

When a worker is in the work, he is worshiped and White.

No matter what this worker does or says, he is White.

If the worker wants to leave the work to get married, he falls off the pedestal and is Black.

Now, no matter what this worker says or does, he is Black.

He will be accused of any number of things.

He will not be as credible or right as a worker that is still White.

This is to offer you my profound apology to you in front of the world.

In 1989-90, I received a package of letters in which there was information regarding the issue of sexual abuse involving Bob Ingram.

And with it was a copy of a letter from head Workers to Alaska that cited you for some undisclosed “doctrinal” difference with them.

And among those letters was one that cited both Bob Ingram and yourself involving CSA.

In getting together historical facts, I need all the help I can get.

The time has arrived for some serious research work for my Master of Philosophy and my topic is the history, sociology and theology of a group of Christians who claim to have no name but are variously known by outsiders as the 2x2s, Cooneyites and when I was growing up in Co Fermanagh, Northern Ireland very simply called ‘the meeting people’.

It is not my intention to give them a name but for the purpose of this work and for brevity I will use the term 2x2s. In applying this name it is not my intention to be either arbitrary or offensive. I am aware that today there are only a small number who would have any association with Edward Cooney and what we today call the 2x2s are a follow on from those who excommunicated Cooney in 1928.
