Workers Contradictions Versus the Bible by J.M.

If it is true that people who sincerely believe in something can be deceived, how would they discover whether or not they are, in fact, being deceived?

Simple. Turn to God's word.

I believe that in order to escape deception, a person would need an authoritative and reliable source of information outside his "testimony" by which he can judge spiritual truths and compare his experience. He must be willing to subject his "testimony" to something other than the grilling of his own subjective experience which he claims to be from God. Why? Because if the person used his own testimony to validate his experience then he could not determine whether or not he is deceived since that is appealing to that which is part of the deception to discover truth. It won't work.

Therefore, in order to discover if you are being deceived, you must appeal to God's word and compare your "testimony" to it. If what your testimony points to is in contradiction to God's word, then your testimony is not true.

"See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men; according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ." Colossians 2:8

There are many today who regard truth and error as matters of small consequence; if a man lives rightly, they say, it matters not much what his beliefs and opinions are. Such statements do not surprise us. Night and day are all one to a blind man. Truth and error are all one to an ignorant man.

The authority to baptize was given only to one type of ministry. The ones to who Jesus gave this authority. No minister can bring you into anything more than what he has. The wrong kind of minister, even though he might baptize you by immersion, can only bring you into the church he is a part of. On the other hand, when one is baptized by a MINISTER WHO IS IN FELLOWSHIP WITH JESUS, HE SHARES WITH HIM THE SAME PURE FELLOWSHIP THAT HE IS ENJOYING.

There is no record of a hired minister in the New Testament to preach the word of God. No hireling minister has any scriptural right to baptize anybody. Jesus deliberately sought to have the scriptures fulfilled in His life and ministry.

An elderly 2x2 professing woman - 1980 - “I never give more than two dollars at a time to the workers because I don’t want to tempt them with too much money.”

A professing family was on the way to gospel meeting and they saw an elderly couple with a flat tire by the side of the road. The suggestion was made that they stop to help them but the reply was, “No! We can’t stop to help anyone. We are going to meeting!”

This topic has caused suicides, emotional breakdowns and forced people to stay in physically abusive marriages. The workers do not agree on this issue. Some workers have excommunicated many people because of divorce.

The older workers are very careful around anyone who has biblical understanding because they don't want to reveal their heresies. They warn the friends and workers to "be wise as serpents and harmless as doves" and actually train them not to answer questions but to be gentle and softspoken while evading questions. Their method of evasion is to make statements such as : "Well the Bible says.....quote a verse. or "I believe....." Or..."What do you think that means?" or they will make a joke or sarcastic remark to deflect the topic somewhere else. In this manner they can imply that their doctrine agrees with the Bible or they can say what they believe without running the risk of getting into trouble. They sometimes will tell what they believe in private, but they have to tell only what the head worker allows in the meetings. The workers claim that the scripture is the authority but then they supercede scripture by imposing their own statements in a disclaimer and negating what the scripture says. Or they will make up an allegorical explanation of scripture, thereby negating what scripture has said.

The workers do not teach what the Bible says but rather what they want taught:

All respect given to them,
A perpetuation of their lifestyle,
Their little kingdom on earth.

They claim to be the sole possessors of true knowledge of scripture, regardless of scripture. The workers twist simple Bible comments into commands and the Bible's firm promises into conditional hopes.

It isn't the younger workers' fault that they don't know anything about Biblical doctrines. If they tried to understand the Bible by a systematic study, they would be reprimanded and forced out of the ministry.)

(This is their doctrine: We have no name, no organization, no church buildings, the ministry does not marry, we take no collections, we have no TVs, the women wear no makeup, or long pants, we don’t dance, we don’t do charity work, we don’t drink, we don’t smoke, we don’t play sports, don’t mingle with the world, we don’t believe in the same God that Christians believe in, we don’t believe anyone else is saved except those who profess through the workers and stay faithful to them and attend meetings all their lives.)

It is doubtful that the workers gave the Cuban government any doctrinal statements. The Cuban government was probably investigating the workers' financial activities or to see if they were a front for political activism. Why would they give the Cuban government a copy of their doctrines when they won't even give it to their own young workers or professing members?)

We don't need to know how or by whom it was preserved. But we do know of the harmony of God's Word and way."

Was it with Jesus as we have always been told in Gospel Meetings, or by a man named William Irvine in 1897? We believe Hebrews 12:2 'Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.' I would like to give you some references that mean a lot to me as we carry the gospel to people and point them to something that is from the beginning and not to something begun by man. In John 17:5 Jesus spoke of the glory which He had with the Father before the world was, and in John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word", etc. So there is no date for the starting, as it was with the Heavenly Father before the world. Why would we want something started by a man when we have in the scripture something that is from the beginning and scripture to back it up?"

(Note: Fallacy of the strawman used. Proof was given for when the Word and the glory Jesus had with the Father started. This information is totally irrelevant to the question asked in the first two sentences.)

Woman asked one of the older brother workers if he had heard of William Irvine. The worker: "Well, I don't think I can talk about him..." The woman: "Well, have you heard of him or haven't you?" The worker: "I can't hear you very well, my hearing is getting so bad."

In direct contradiction to what he said above, William Lewis also said, "Since early workers followed a Scottish preacher in Ireland before the turn of the 20th century, they have spent their lives traveling from home to home with little more than their clothes, Lewis said." Quoted from in the Minneapolis Star Tribune 11/2-/86. William Lewis stated in personal interview that he does not preach that one must hear two workers in this fellowship to be saved.

Willie Brown - Oakland Special Meeting - February 29, 1946 "Do you know, the ones that have helped us so much in the past, are coming near the end of their journey; but the work of God is not dependant upon any man, - - People ask us, "who started this?" It is born of God! It is not traceable to any man and we thank God for that!"

Harry Brownlee, October 29, 1995 Hunter, North Dakota Convention - "Some have asked when did this start? We don't know, but for my family it started in 1904 when two workers came to our door and my parents heard the gospel. We don't claim apostolic succession. What is this producing? That's confirmation of the true see. There's literature floating around. Do you know the thrust of these letters? To undermine your belief in the Bible."

We are very glad to go back to Jesus and His simple teaching, which is good as John wrote to keep to what is from the beginning. There is so much in the world to confuse one, and we need the help & guidance of the Spirit, which Jesus said He will lead you into all Truth."

Joshua Gamble - About 10-15 years ago, an older worker from Scotland or Ireland, Joshua Gamble, spoke from the platform at Gilroy, CA convention regarding the origin or founder of the "truth." The American friends who were unaware there was any beginning to this fellowship other than the apostles, were quite shook up. (NOTE: Apparently where he labors in the work, it is common knowledge to the friends.)

Dan Hilton, Letter 11/21/89, End of Letter - "However, irregardless of a written record being preserved, truth is truth. If nobody believes it and/or...if everybody believes it...Whether or not a thing is believed in has nothing to do with its correctness. To use a parable illustration, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. That is an established fact of existence. Whether or not people believe the sun rises in the east and sets in the west...in no way changes that established fact of reality... Everybody could believe the sun rises in the west and sets in the east, but this would not make it true. For anyone to say that what the Bible teaches was started at some certain year since the first century is pitiful ignorance, and closing the eyes to established facts and truths. The teachings of the New Testament were started in the first century when God's dear Son was here on earth; that is, those truths were established in a group of believers then. But that is not where it started. What was given by God through his Son was planned before the world began. Merlin Howlett - In 1988, Merlin Howlett stated at Milltown convention, "In just the past 88 years we have had the privilege of convention. 88 years ago there wasn't one convention on earth. Now there are 126 conventions.

Garrett Hughes made numerous references from convention platforms in his last years relative to the "truth" being started at the turn of the century. Garrett Hughes said at the Funeral Service for Erling Omdal, 10/6/87, Eagle Bend, MN: "Ninety years ago, a letter came from Ireland. We heard about those with no home, no name, etc. Forty people made their choice. Sixteen went out in the work - that was the beginning...There is not a country not open to the gospel now. It is the most marvelous thing ever to happen." ("Ninety years ago" = 1987 Minus 90 years = 1897! It jibes with the facts!)

Irving Ross - Overseer of Ohio & West Virginia at Bradley, Oklahoma convention on October 26,1997 - "Some were going out, we read about that, said they went out from us, that it might be manifested that they are not of us, they cease to exercise strength in Christ, and a belief that the willingness to habitat flesh in their lives, then to question it, Wonder about its beginning, I suppose, where it started, how it started, I suppose, began to think , well ya know, what you are believing with that man, ah, and he is going to get killed and about another thirty years he lived it and then he died but, he is still gone, he is not alive. And then, what you’re believing, is, be about 100 (one hundred) years old. But what we’re believing in, especially those from the Jews and other people, who are believing in something a lot older that. I tell you what we believe in goes back further that.

Well, the people who have got a revelation of the Truth that is in Jesus,

NEVER TRIED TO FIND COMFORT OR HAVE NO REASON TO TRY TO FIND COMFORT IN TRYING TO TRACE ITS BEGINNING IN THE EARTH.

Because it’s not where it began. But we’re rather fortunate, we’ve lived a few years and we’ve known some that lived quiet a few years before they passed from time into eternity, they had a part in preaching the gospel. They could tell us a lot of that experience, sometimes we call’em the earlier days of their experience.God put it into their hearts to feel after him, and to seek after him, and to find and began to believe in a WAY like Jesus taught. But I NEVER HEARD ONE of them say That was when it began. (This Ross quote has not had the spelling corrected......It is disjointed, rambling, boring)

A brother worker who read "The Secret Sect", stated that it's factually sound from what he already knew, except for a few minor details; his knowledge came from older workers who personally knew William Irvine.

Willie Jamieson, Post Falls Conv., 1957 "We aren't believing in a religion. We are believing in a life. The life of God and His Son...Everything that is false has a definite origin--a man who started it. Wesley started the Methodist; Joseph Smith started the Mormons; Mary Baker Eddy started the Christian Scientist. This is the only way that was started by Christ."

Donald Karnes In 1984, he wrote from Germany: "Two outstanding events mark the 20th century: 2 rebirths. First, the rebirth of the Truth. God pouring out His spirit upon all flesh. The resurgence of His work in the world. Elizer (the servant) was commissioned to seek a Bride. The Gospel call: Prepare to meet the Bridegroom. Make ready for the marriage. Second: the rebirth of the Jewish national out of the ruin heaps of Europe. These two events are going on at the same time. "

Eldon Kendrew in personal visit with Mitchells 6/4/95 - "It's like a seed. No, better yet, it's like your great-grandmother's recipe. You are looking through your great-grandmother's recipe box and you find a recipe for what you think is a cake that she used to always make that was just wonderful and you wonder, "Is this the one?" So you make it and YES! It tastes just exactly the same. It doesn't matter if the recipe has been lost in the box for years and years; you know that it is the recipe for the same cake because it tastes the same."

Eldon Kendrew in personal visit with Mitchells 6/4/95 - "Look at it like this. I have no idea who my great-great-grandfather was, but I know that he had to exist, because here I am today. We know how life begets life and it is the same spiritually. I do not believe in some form of apostolic succession--that would be like the Catholic church. People might build their faith on that, but I would like to believe that the friends and ministry did come down through history that way. "

An ex-worker said when he was first in the work, he received a long document (probably: A Spiritual Fraud by Doug Parker) containing information about the beginning of this fellowship. When he asked his older companion Fred Kinglake whether or not it was true, Fred said, "I can't say that it's not true."

Iowa gospel meeting, 1995: "We cannot trace this back through the ages! and that is good, for if we could, that would destroy our faith."

Roddy MacLean (Scotland Worker) Letter dated June 1, 1995 - "I never met Wm Irvine at any time and believe he was used of God, but was never the origin of what we believe. I understand he became too big in himself and left the fellowship we love. Workers I know and respect preach only what Jesus lived and taught with no mention at all of Wm Irvine or any other man save only real appreciation for those who retell in our day things taught in Jesus day. This faith began in New Testament days, not in Ireland nor in the U.K."

Alfred Magowan in Testimony of a Witness for the Defence 1/13/56 - "And even if all that he (Doug Parker) dug out of the graves of our 60 year history was true: would that justify exhumation?"

Some say this way started with Jesus, but it began earlier. It began with God, He gave Jesus the Gospel, the Doctrine. William Peterson - "It is true Irvine's mind did go bad. Did that change God's way? Would you expect a man's prophecies to come to pass who was mentally unbalanced? Would you call a man a false prophet who had the misfortune of losing his mind?"

Helen Phimister, (Scotland Worker), Letter dated June 15, 1995*"You sound rather disturbed about something to do with a man called William Irvine. I do believe he served God in sincerity and truth at one time. What happened I've never asked because our life doesn't really revolve round any person but around Jesus. We feel sad at heart if any lose out because it's eternal life that's our goal and we are anxious to reach that goal and help others to reach it too. We heard at our Sp. Mtgs. we will all finish but will we all reach the goal? Searching my own heart. You mentioned being "brave and honest"--hard to grasp what you mean. Even though David knew all the 'ins and outs' of Saul he never once tried to expose him - even if we knew all about others (which I don't and never likely to) I don't think it would be kind to keep talking. Of course, the soul you mentioned is gone & the judge of all the earth will do right by all but I'm sure your faith isn't built on the rights or wrongs of men but the simple right or truth in Jesus. We heard at convention about faith - God's word - God said it, we believe it and that settles it - gives us a wonderful peace. Glad this is really how I feel. What we rest our hope on is what God said - what God pointed us to. This settles it once and for all and it brings a great peace. We have enjoyed very special times at Conventions and everything to reassure our hearts that God is here amongst his people. We feel so privileged to know and see what has been revealed to us and this revelation is a rock to us that the very gates of hell won't prevail against. I hope you will understand what I'm trying to say. I don't know what you really want me to say but be assured of this I'm not trying to evade anything - but neither can I feel justified in condemning any, especially those who are long since gone and know so little about...I do hope this will help to put your mind and heart at rest. Don't worry needlessly about things really that don't come into this matter of our salvation. We have all to work out our own with fear & trembling & this Paul tells us comes about through letting God work in us the good pleasure of His will...Keep your faith strong in the man Christ Jesus. Tests will come but we must hold fast to what we have attained. I'm thankful I love God, love Jesus, love the family of God, love his will - don't feel worthy but thankful to have a part in what is eternal."

Walter Pollack, Spokesman Review, June 5, 1983 “We know that it began with a group of men in the British Isles around the turn of the century. That’s as far as we have been able to trace it.”

Willie Pollock stated at the Glenn Valley, British Columbia convention in 1988: "There has NOT been a continuity from Jesus time until now, but we feel there was a stump left somewhere--but today, there is a tree. God's work may have to go underground again, but there is a tree of fellowship today."

During the time of the captivity, there was no tree--no true worship and sacrifice. But Daniel prayed toward Jerusalem like a stump. We don't read of any tree during the period of time between the Old and New Testaments, but when Jesus came, we read of six people. It sprouted again. In our day, there is a tree that is flourishing."

Frank Porter, 1995: "This is NOT made by a man! So get that out of your head!"

Jack Price said that he believed the "way" sprang up again around the turn of the century, that godly men were moved by the Holy Spirit to get together and restart (?) the way.

Jack Price said that when he was young an old trustworthy worker told him to not let anyone ever tell him that William Irvine started this way because it wasn't true. And Jack went on to say that he has never believed it since.

So we can go back and we don't have to trace it generation to generation back to the beginning. The fact that we find 2 and 2, 4 today helps me to appreciate that it was in the beginning."

Everett Swanson communication by letter with exiting "friend." 1995 *First of all, I will tell you what I teach. I tell people that the Faith is a continuation of New Testament days. The word continuation means two things. It can mean there is no break and it also means a break in time no matter how long the break is, if you return to the same thing. We have what was in existence 2,000 years ago. I believe there was a break between N.T. times & today, but the same word & work has been revived. A wheat seed can remain on the shelf for 1,000 years and then be planted & grow & it will produce wheat.If someone said there was a continual apostolic succession I doubt if that is accurate, but their statement does not change my salvation and relationship with God. Even if a person lied, that would have nothing to do with the Truth or our salvation. Truth does not have to be in people (although hopefully it always is) because it is in God & in Christ & in his eternal word. In Ps 11:3, if foundations are destroyed, the righteous would have nothing to build on. The temple of Solomon had huge foundation stones laid under the surface & the temple was later burned but likely the foundation stones were still there when the temple was rebuilt in the book of Ezra. We know where to build today because Christ laid the foundation stones & they are still there.

May Sylvester, September - 1989 “The information in that book (THE SECRET SECT) is just that man’s theory about how the TRUTH began.”

Tharold Sylvester - In the August 18, 1983, Skagit Valley Herald, serving NW Washington, reporters asked Tharold Sylvester if he denied the historical account of the group's origins found in the book "The Secret Sect", and he replied, “We don’t deny it when asked if the historical account of the founding was true.”

Irvine Pearson, Seneca, Illinois Convention, August 16-19, 1973 - Thursday A.M. - "I was in Dublin one day on the street and looked at the crowds of people, their hair styles, red ties, shoe styles, etc., and I saw a girl across the street in the midst of all this and she stood out amongst them all. She was displaying the banner. All took notice of that girl, her walk and ways and dress were different. What was written on that banner? Aaron and Hur lifted up the hands of Moses - the Lord was that banner. In this convention, we should be lifted up and set right and get MEASURED and weighed and the physician can do what is necessary and then we can carry that banner. We have a perfect right to display it higher than ourselves, lift it up. This is the purpose of convention. Have the presence of God in the meeting, bring God in the meeting and find out where we stand.

Eldon Tenniswood, Milltown Convention 8/28/88 "I Timothy 2:8-9 We know that this is a trial. There are certain streaks of vanity in women. That thing that attracts people the most to God's WAY is to have a good conscience towards God. Diamond rings (engagement rings) are costly array. Humble people will always obey."

An unprofessing relative of a professing woman said, "I have never seen anyone work so hard to be so ugly!" She was referring to how much time professing women spend on their long hair.

The early workers did have a long list of rules which governed all behavior from the wearing of wedding rings, the length of women's skirts, to how to dispose of the bread and wine after meeting. This was circulated to all the elders in Washington state.

William Irvine's earliest attacks were on "R P and E" Religion, Politics and Education. Then, from there the list expanded to clergymen, church buildings, linen handkerchiefs, money, tobacco, liquor, weddings, jewelry, hats, hairstyles, colors of clothing, beards, non beards, shoe styles, black stockings for women, brown underwear for men, long sleeves for women. Each decade the list of rules changed just a little, with some leftovers from the decades before.

They expanded to rules against radios, dancing, athletic interests, television, denim clothing, white shoes, red shoes, sandals, movies, flavored coffee, hobbies, video games, owning airplanes, etc. These rules took the place of any mention of sin, immorality, dishonesty. People were made to feel guilty for everything but sin. Today, pornography, adultery, homosexuality, abusive spouses, and deceit are problems within the group and its ministry, yet no one seems to notice. As long as the workers focus on outward appearance rather than inward repentance, people seem oblivious.

The younger generation is proud to say that no longer do the workers rule anyone with their old legalism. But what about repentance of sin? Will the workers ever take care of that issue?

A professing woman wanted to give a baby shower for her professing relative. The workers told her “No, it isn’t right to put pressure on others for gifts. The left hand should not know what the right hand is doing.”

A woman wanted to have a birthday party for an unprofessing neighbor. The elder’s wife told her, “I would never do such a thing! I wouldn’t waste my time with worldly people!”

Little do you know some of the struggles of the servants of God on behalf of the children of God, while you are asleep, they are agonizing in prayer for you before God, anxious that you would walk in the fear of God. God said, "Stand on your feet and take the elders of Israel with you." It is so that God's servants go on before the people. God asks something of his servants that He doesn't ask of you folks. Jesus in the garden, took 3 of His disciples and brought them to a certain place and said, "Watch and pray," and Jesus went a little farther, Jesus went farther than he asked His disciples to go. He asks his disciples, his servants, to go a little farther than the Christians. In one state an older worker didn't leave right after convention, so we asked for a little worker's meeting and I remember I was glad I qualified to be in the meeting that day, I felt glad. A man on the convention grounds asked one of the workers if he could sit in that worker's meeting, and the worker told him he could but even after looking forward to it, the moment it came, he realized, "I DON"T QUALIFY TO SIT IN THAT MEETING WITH THOSE WHO LEFT EVERYTHING FOR THE GOSPEL'S SAKE."

There is a meeting you can qualify for and that is the Sunday morning meeting and the Wednesday night meeting. May God help you prepare for that meeting, to qualify for it. People outside cannot qualify to sit in that meeting, because they sit down in that meeting and hear others telling what God has done for them, but they qualify for a Gospel meeting and listen to the wonderful work of God and to the hope God offers through the Gospel.

Hubert Childers, Seneca, Illinois Convention - August 16-19, 1973 - Friday A.M. - "All of those who speak from the platform, I'm sure, are troubled, praying and searching the Scripture, that when they stand here before you, they might have words to touch your heart. This isn't just sermons. The world has sermons, the false religions have sermons. You can buy them, but God's people don't have sermons. God's servants agonize and labor and pray that they might have a message from God to the hearts of God's people. If we could see behind the scenes, yesterday, last night, and this morning, I expect we would have seen our sister, Louie, after all these years, laboring, agonizing, and praying, searching the Scripture to have a part in the meeting this morning. This is what makes meetings like this precious to God and to each of us, that we would have a message from God to build up and strengthen our brothers and sisters. That part you have in the meeting is very important and it is very necessary that you prepare, and that the words you speak would be a little message from God.

Will Thompson - Monaghan Convention, Ireland 1957 - “Justified in the Spirit. Here is a little verse that came to me as I thought of being justified in the Spirit. “Hereby know ye the Spirit of God. Every Spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is from God.” John did not mean that we have a mental belief that Christ came and was born of the Virgin Mary and suffered at the hands of Pontius Pilate – it means more than that. John had in mind that the Spirit of Christ would be manifested in mortal flesh. As we look on the world today, we see quite a sprinkling of religious life, much sacrifice and much going on outwardly, but we don’t see too much of what John wrote here – of the Spirit of Christ being manifested in human flesh.

William Irvine and some of the earliest workers sought to do miraculous healings but were unable to do so. Some even tried chiropractic adjustments as a form of laying on of hands.

The Impartial Reporter and Farmers’ Journal mentioned a few of these:

IMPARTIAL REPORTER AND FARMERS JOURNAL 7/25/12 page 3 - “With demure faces their preachers speculate on the possibility of raising the dead, while laying hands in conjunction with the use of anointing oil has taken the place of the services of the physician. And now a fresh malady of mental madness has broken out – certain of them claim to speak with the tongues of the Spirit, screaming forth a stream of gibberish which is gravely interpreted as being of the Holy Ghost.”

THE IMPARTIAL REPORTER AND FARMERS JOURNAL 7/19/17 - “The old phenomena of hysteria is not absent, and many of the women preachers fall into a sort of trance in which they are supposed to be speaking under the influence of the Holy Spirit.”

IMPARTIAL REPORTER AND FARMERS JOURNAL- 7/25/12, page 3 - “At Stowmarket a boy of 11, after being baptized, was seized with convulsions and howled like a dog for a period of four hours. This was gravely diagnosed by the Cooneyite preacher in attendance as ‘the great and sore complaining of Yum, the dog demon!’ But after much supplication by the faithful at the meeting, the canine devil was exorcised and departed with a last dismal howl. Not to be outdone, a young woman from Stowmarket, who was induced at the meeting to declare herself a convert, suddenly fell to the ground in a species of epilepsy, foaming and wallowing in the most distressing manner. But at last coming to herself, and weak and exhausted with the strong convulsions, she was persuaded that seven devils had flown from her.”

Soon thereafter the early workers decided that miracles were not for this age.

Jack Carroll - Divine Healing, Tongues, Etc. - “The United States has been the birthplace of many of these movements such as Christian Science, Dowism, Sanfordism, New Thoughtism, the Pentecostal Tongues Movement and a few score other divine healing cults which have been the direct cause of many unnecessary deaths, unbeliefs and confusion as well as a source of discouragement to God’s true people.

Percy Fletcher - Olympia, WA 1957. - “People have said that we have all the marks for the New Testament Ministry, but why haven’t we the other side? Why can’t we cast out devils, why can’t we heal the body? I think I can today give people an answer to such a question. When Jesus came He started to work miracles, to raise the dead, give sight to the blind, cleanse the lepers, heal the sick. Did He do this in the latter part of His ministry? When those disciples were sent forth they also were given this power, but did they use this very long? Just a little while. Some say, “Why don’t you speak with tongues as the disciples did? The Day of Pentecost God came down and everyone heard his own tongue, this wonderful Gospel. On one of Paul’s journeys, I think the last journey of all, Paul was given this authority. Acts 28:1-6. Those people were convinced when they saw this miracle. To my mind, god has some spectacular, wonderful means of establishing His covenant in every age, and special miracles have been performed. But most have been set aside after the covenant was established.”

Rose Johnson - 1979 - “Miracles were for the Jewish people, not for Gentiles.”

Brother worker - gospel meeting 10/31/65 - “The purpose of miracles was because there was no written word.”

The workers have severely reprimanded any professing people who presumed to visit and pray for the sick. They firmly state that they are usurping the workers’ authority. In reality, the workers do not pray for the sick or the dying because they think God doesn’t care about our natural needs. They view death as a good thing, and suffering is a good thing. They don’t think that people can be saved at the end of their lives because they need to have spent time listening to the workers, going to the meetings in order to receive the Spirit.

It's so quiet nobody in the world knows about it, but some of the greatest miracles that are happening - no less are these miracles than the miracles you read about in the Bible. Right under your eyes, but God has done it so quietly and so amazingly that most people in the world, and most of our friends even don't know a thing about what's going on.

Kathleen Holland, one of the early workers, after 50 years in the work admitted to people that she personally knew “Eddie Cooney”. She related several stories about “Eddie” and finished saying, “If anyone ever asks about Eddie, you tell them that NO SUCH MAN EVER LIVED!” March 1982, California, personal conversation

When Edward Cooney was excommunicated hundreds of other people were excommunicated at the same time when they objected to the change in his status. These people became the Cooneyites. At first they frequently visited 2x2 conventions but were not allowed to give their testimonies and they were watched like hawks to see who they talk to. Workers were stationed behind and around them and if they attempted to stand up during the testimony time they were pulled down physically. The workers grabbed their clothing and forced them to sit down. Shunning and whispered lies were told about them behind their backs.

When people carried signs opposing meetings and conventions outside their entrances, the workers would call the police to try to have them arrested, but the police told them that it was not illegal to express personal opinions and display information.

The friends and workers were taught to destroy old address lists, documents and old Hymnbooks, even old Bibles which contain any worker notes or names in them. When a professing person died, their relatives were asked to destroy all their old letters and notes. They were warned not to let anything fall into the hands of their enemies. The friends don’t know who the enemy is and assume maybe the workers are referring to atheists. But the workers actually are afraid that ex 2x2s and Christians will confront their lies, their unbiblical beliefs and historical origin in Masonry. They especially were afraid of the Impartial Reporter Newspaper articles. And they don’t want the public to find out about their many immoralities and the way they deal with people who question their bad decisions. Professing people are so accustomed to this secrecy that they don’t realize that real Christians don’t hide their beliefs.

Elizabeth Jamieson, personal letter 1969. - “In 1920, Mabel Pryor and I went to Vancouver Island. At that time, there were no friends north of Victoria. Here we discovered a man of the Plymouth Brethren sect who was going from house to house, influencing people against us. His favorite salutation when he met anyone was, “Are you saved?” He accused me of being a ‘Cooneyite.’ I pretended I didn’t know what he meant, letting on that the only coney I knew about was the little animal spoken about in the book of Proverbs. And of course, he was against women preachers. But in spite of all, a little church was formed at Sandwick. I am happy to say that the children and the grandchildren are still going on in that little church.”

Herbert Childers, Seneca, Illinois Convention - August 16-19, 1973 - Friday A.M. - " One of our friends has what we thought was a terrible disease and was suffering. One of the workers was by his bedside and looked out of the window at a herd of white faced cattle grazing and said, "You have a nice herd." That man said, "Those cattle don't mean anything to me now, All that means anything to me is my hope in God." We are coming to that. Isn't it worthwhile? The struggles, the battles, the self-denial, the hardness that comes for Jesus sake? Wouldn't it be worthwhile to be true and face it, and be faithful, and when breathing our last to know that the inheritance will be ours forever?

Some folks who were going to a convention, weren't sure of the way and they inquired at a station. The attendant there said, "You are on the right road, but haven't gone far enough." Could we say, we are on the right road but haven't gone far enough? May God find us going on and on!"
