  (T)

Take a Stand

The stance taken by members to announce their belief in or to defend their "right church" is based solely on the Two-by-Two system of ministry and Meetings in homes.

Take My Stand

See "Profess."

Take the Meeting

To lead the meeting.

This is a simple task in that the form of the meeting is always the same: a ritual or tradition.

Usually the "Elder" or the home owner leads the meeting in his home, unless a worker is present, in which case leadership is automatically submitted to the worker (male or female). The leader chooses the hymns that will be sung, unless he chooses to allow someone else to suggest one or two. He is the last person to pray, and the last person to give his testimony. This signifies the end of prayer time and speaking time. In the Sunday morning meeting, the leader administers the "emblems," choosing who shall give thanks for the bread, and who will give thanks for the "wine." He is the last to partake.

He is also charged with the duty of disposing of whatever is left of the "emblems" (the bread by fire and the contents of the cup by being poured out upon the earth) after the meeting is finished and members have gone.

Television

The workers have always sought to isolate the members from "the world."

Two-by-Twos are not to have television sets. This seems to be on the verge of changing, as many Two-by-Twos have acquired sets and even VCR's in the last few years. These are kept more or less hidden, as this prohibition is still generally observed. Radios also were banned, although they have been tolerated in most areas for the past twenty years or so.

Temple

Temples are a synonym for church buildings in most cases, and are roundly condemned.

The workers condemn people who gather for worship in church buildings, citing that the correct temple is the one built without hands (human body); then they command that meetings must only be held in member's homes, which of course are not built by human hands! This is a case of drawing a distinction where there is no difference.

  • "The only temple in the universe today is the body of man. God did not want His people building church buildings. "  Jack Carroll, November 21, 1954.

Test All Things

All things are to be tested by the workers' opinions. It doesn't seem to occur to most to measure things by the Scriptures -- God's Word.

Testimony

The sharing of one's understanding of a "studied" portion of Scripture as spoken by each "professing" member at a meeting. These "testimonies" are referred to as sharing "the bread of life," and are deemed by many to be prophecies, as in 1 Corinthians 14.

Testimony (The)

Another of the several names the cult has assumed and uses to denote itself. See also, "The Truth."

Testing the Meeting/Convention

In a "Gospel Meeting," the invitation given by a worker for "moved" individuals in the audience to "take their stand." See "Profess."

Tradition

Each Sunday morning at 10:30 AM, the Sunday morning fellowship meeting begins with a hymn.

  • It then moves to prayer time, when all who "profess" pray a similar prayer to the one they prayed the week before -- in some cases word for word.
  • Then a hymn is sung.
  • Next, time is allotted for "testimonies," where all who "profess" share some interpretation of a Scripture portion, usually a very simple expression of desire to become a better servant.
  • Then a third hymn is sung.
  • Then, thanks for the bread is offered, and a saucer with a slice of bread is passed around the room, each professing person taking a pinch from the slice and eating it, followed by thanks for the cup.
  • Then, a cup of grape juice is passed around the room, each professing person taking a sip. Another hymn is sung, and the meeting is over.

Each Wednesday evening, a study meeting begins in the same fashion, and the format is exactly the same as on Sunday, although the "Emblems" are absent.

Each year there are Special Meetings, and again the format is the same, though it is usually not possible for all to testify and the "Emblems" are absent.

Each year there is an annual convention held, the meetings taking the same form again, only there are three each day.

At their "Gospel Meetings," the form of the meeting is the same, except the workers preach during the time slot reserved for members' testimonies in other types of meetings, and piano music is allowed. All of this is by definition either tradition or ritual, yet they do not hesitate to condemn others for such things.

  • "A seminary is where they bury the Bible. The traditions of men keep them bound and lead them to hell."  Senior Worker, July 12, 1966.

Traditional Church

All churches other than "The Truth," especially the denominational churches.

The other cults also fit this category, since both are lumped together by the workers.

  • "We must not associate with anyone outside our Fellowship. We are servants to God and our workers. We denounce all churches and Pastors to be Satanic and corrupt. Our workers are near the level of Jesus. Some are at His level. Jesus is very human and our example." Elder, Fellowship Meeting, Boston, Massachusetts, May 5, 1985.
  • "Most of our converts come from the traditional church. That clearly shows us how lacking the Church is and it is up to us to show them the true Narrow Way. Our gospel is a way of life." Senior worker, Special Meeting, Los Angeles, California, March 10, 1985.

  • "Traditional Christianity is perverted religion."  Milbury, Massachusetts, May 12, 1985.

Transform

Transformation of one's life is the responsibility of the individual, and is done on one's own power. There is not one excuse for not being able to live up to the acceptable standard that is set by the workers.

It is on account of this heavy duty demand that most of these people, workers included, live a life of continual nervousness around people for fear that their covered up "sin" will be discovered. Some concentrate so heavily on the demanded "righteousness," that they fall easy prey to what the Bible describes as sin.

Trinity

  • "The word Trinity is not found in the Bible. It is a Catholic doctrine that wasn't even mentioned by the early Christians. It wasn't heard of until the second century."    Senior Worker, Washington, 1985.

The Workers will, basically, do anything in order to appear quite orthodox to a person who is examining their beliefs, while knowing full well that they are not. They do not believe orthodox doctrines and are indeed hostile to them.

Here is a quote of a worker named Dale Bors, made in Sacramento California, in 1979, which will tell very well how things stand:

  • "It depends who we are talking to whether we believe in the Trinity or not."

According to the workers, the above is a false doctrine held by the churches of Satan. What many term "the Trinity" (or the basis for this concept as taught in Scripture) is an idea which is openly scoffed and mocked by the Two-by-Twos/Cooneyites , who think that anyone who would believe such a thing has written off his brains. They parrot that "Trinity" is not found in the Bible. Neither is the word "Bible" found in Scripture, yet no worker or "Friend" has ever thrown out his Bible because of that. (See also, p.259.) Senior Worker, Sacramento, California, 1979.

Triunity

A false doctrine, held by the churches of Satan. (See "Trinity" above.)

Trust

Trust is placed solely in the workers.

"Faith is believing what you do not see. When we first come to meetings, and before faith comes, we must almost like the messengers, or trust them, then faith will come."  Senior Worker, Prince George Convention, British Columbia, 1989. Personal notes.

Truth (The)

A name used by the Two-by-Twos/Cooneyites with reference to their church, like "The Faith," "The Way," "The Lowly Way," "The Jesus Way," "The Testimony," "The Friends," "The Family of God," "The Fellowship, " and possibly one or two more that I am not aware of. In private conversation, they use such names for their church among themselves, but are careful not to do so in the presence of anyone who is not a member, and if asked for a name, will reply that their church has no name; that Jesus took no name but that of his Father, or that "We are in the name of Jesus."

A worker instructed my sister's children to use this name if asked at school.

  • "We are neither Catholic nor Protestant. The Catholics broke away from The Truth when men lifted up against the simplicity of Christ's example ministry. Then the Protestants broke away from the Catholics."  Jack Carroll.

Two-by-Two

A name given to the "Christian Conventions" sect, referring to the style of ministry they practice.
