"Language of Truth" - The Way of the Workers and Friends
(M)
Manifest
To outwardly exhibit something from within.
"Jesus means the Savior. Jesus manifested Christ and it was Christ in Jesus that made Jesus the Savior. Paul labored according to the Christ that was in him. Jesus manifested the Christ within Him. Jesus was a mortal body for the 'Forever Christ.' Christ is only known in the place of obedience. It’s obedience to the voice of God that gives life.Colossians 1:27-29.
" Senior Worker. Turlock Special Meetings. California, 1982.
Marriage
An honorable decision which is given very little chance to take place, since dating is often viewed suspiciously as an "appearance of evil" (especially if dating a non-member). But a married life is seen as less desirable than to join the unmarried ministry. The gift of celibacy is not considered important to discern beforehand, as God is expected to remove all sexual desire if one is willing to go out preaching. Marriages have been arranged by workers to establish an "open home" in areas where there are no professing members so they'll have a place to reside - the end always justifies the means with the workers.
Workers have claimed that "we are free to marry,
but choose not to; " a lie with which some deceive even themselves.
Certainly for several decades now, all workers who have decided to marry have been required to leave the Work, and married persons have not been allowed to become workers
Meditation
This is generally understood to mean deep thought, brought about by driving out any distracting thoughts. There is not much taught as to exactly what is meant by this term, so that one is left to figure out the meaning on his own, as well as a method to achieve the desired end. In my own search for truth, I was a bit interested in transcendental meditation because I thought it might help me. I obtained a small "how to" book, and quickly realized that I already used the method, minus a Mantra, or Hindu god's name.
While a Two-by-Two, I never heard any warnings of such spiritual dangers, beyond those perceived to exist in denominational churches.
Meeting
An assembly of members on privately owned, or in rented halls, for preaching, and sharing "testimonies."
Every "professing" member is expected to attend every meeting possible, and to fail to do so without sufficient reason such as serious illness, is seen as a sign of "backsliding," and will invite a "little visit" by a worker, and discipline if continued. Each "professing" member is expected to read the Bible, and report his or her interpretation (testimony), and pray at Sunday morning, Union, and Wednesday night meetings.
Again, failure to do so is seen as a sign of "backsliding." Members are given the opportunity to pray publicly and "give testimony" at Convention and Special Meetings, but because of the great numbers present, not all are expected to do so. The only meetings in which lay members have no active role, are the Gospel meetings, where any questions asked are usually frowned upon and seen by the workers as arising from a lack of faith.
The only opportunity to converse or question, is at the end of the meetings. Workers prefer to deal with questions privately, whether questions from members or "strangers." Often, the longer a person has been a "professing" member, the less questions are tolerated, since the professing person is supposed to learn "spiritually." Thus, questions are deemed to be a sign of "lacking" the spirit.
"We follow with a faith that questions not, On t'ward the things above. " - from hymn number 270, "Tomorrow's Path," Hymns Old and New.
Messenger
A worker, through whom God delivers His message.
"To be born again means to receive Christ which means receiving the messenger, the message, and receiving the Spirit of God, equals obedience to the will of God. " Senior Worker, August 2, 1966.
Mind
"We purchase the Truth at our own expense. We purchase His mind by giving up our mind. " Senior Worker, Santee, 1980.
Minister
Servant; a worker
"Jesus Christ was the pattern minister and He gave the New Testament ministry to us." Senior Worker, 1980.
Ministry (The)
"The ministry has been the most important part of God's plan in every age. " Senior Worker, Walla Walla, Washington, 1960.
The style of ministry is presented as the "Gospel" and is considered to be the most important thing that Jesus exemplified; it is made out to be the salvation issue. In other words, any "ministry" that does not exactly emulate Jesus' last three and one-half years, is deemed to be in gross error, and to be a ministry of Satan.
Miracle
Today, miracles are held only to occur in a “spiritual” sense. For example, that anyone has heard the Two-by-Two "gospel" is considered a miracle - I agree! Physical healings are usually derided as tricks, used (by God or Satan, no one seems sure which) to deceive people.
"People have said that we have all the marks for the New Testament ministry, but why haven't we the other side - why can't we cast out devils, why can't we heal the body? I think I can give people an answer to such a question. When Jesus came He started to work miracles, to raise the dead, give sight to the blind, cleanse the lepers, heal the sick. Did He do this in the latter part of His ministry?
When those disciples were sent forth they also were given this power, but did they use this very long? Just a little while. Some say, Why don't you speak in tongues as the disciples did?
"The day of Pentecost, God came down and everyone heard his own tongue, this wonderful gospel. On one of Paul's journeys, I think the last journey of all, Paul was given this authority. Acts 28:1-6
. Those people were convinced when they saw this miracle. To my mind, God has some spectacular, wonderful means of establishing His covenant in every age, and special miracles have been performed. But most have been set aside after the covenant was established." Senior Worker, Olympia, Washington, 1957.
Mission
"Gospel Meetings. "
Mission Field
An area assigned to a pair of workers by their Head worker.
The "field" includes its members, their "fellowship Meetings," "study Meetings," as well as the responsibility to evangelize the "prospects" in that area.
Mormon
This is correctly classified as a cult, but not out of any understanding of Mormon doctrines. It is classed by the workers along with all other churches, highlighting their ignorance of the doctrines held by any of these groups.
Moved
This is often claimed in meetings by some who have read a verse or two of Scripture, just prior to "spiritualizing" it to pieces. It sounds like some "spirit" has mystically whisked the person away, and that is the intent.
Music
The only acceptable type of music within this cult is unaccompanied (acapella) singing of hymns.
Oh yes, they do use a piano in the "Gospel Meetings," but you would not expect them to impose their whole legalistic diatribe on strangers, would you?
That would scare many away!
Mystery
"Mystery" and "secret" are used as synonyms.
"God's kingdom - God's kingdom is a mystery, and God's kingdom is a secret, it's a secret."
Senior Worker. Glen Valley, 1990.
