"If you would like to know more about Christianity in general, and about how the two-by-twos distorted it, you should take a look at the book called "Has the Truth Set You Free?" My copy is falling apart..with highlighted segments everywhere!! This book does not do any emotional bashing of the two-by-two's. On the contrary, it very nicely says "here is what the workers will tell you...this is what the Bible SAYS....and here is the difference and the error." I devoured the books, starting with "Reflections." All of the books keep pointing to the pain suffered by so many in the way. I think ALL fundamentalist churches inflict pain on their people to a certain extent - just by imposing rules - but the Way is even more destructive because it was founded on a lie! Over and over again I read and identified with the outrage, the secrecy, the out and out lies from people who said it was a sin to lie!
What Do "The Workers" say about "The Books?"
A brother worker who read The Secret Sect, stated that it is factually sound from what he already knew, except for a few minor details; his knowledge came from older workers who personally knew William Irvine.

The whole purpose of the author is to disrupt and overthrow the faith of those weak in the church..-.these people who publish discrediting, doubt raising scandals are doing it for all of the wrong reasons."
"Is it true you read the book written by someone who turned against the truth? Have you ever stopped and thought of comparing the Bible with that book? Surely faith in God would cause you to believe the Bible? Unwillingness in one person could cause them to write much that would be contrary to God's word. I hope you'll believe me?? I've been in the work since 1955, and I know for a fact untrue things are said. If you choose to not believe me, at least I have tried. All that is in print cannot be trusted."
Having read Has the Truth Set You Free?, a worker wrote: "It would take me forever to document the things we disagree on. It isn't written in a way that offers anything else to its readers, but rather to undermine what is already believed. Both this and The Secret Sect seem full of sour grapes. I notice truth is mingled throughout the book and that may draw some, but the spirit seems loathsome. I'm afraid they have taken on a job impossible if they are intent on changing the points we've believed in, and the several customs we're used to. So it seems best to me to lay it all down and forget it. Go on and live by what our old friends died by. It's safe and after all, they had the in-dwelling Christ and that's always been the objective. Why monkey with it? I'd be inclined toward an easier approach would it work, but I'm satisfied I must be as those who loved not their lives. They were able to rise above that great temptation and stay above it until death overtook them." Excerpt from letter of Brother Worker.
"Someone also mentioned that you might have gotten the 'Secret Sect' book. Doug Parker offered for the work one time and wasn't willing to get rid of all of his possessions, as the disciples did in Luke 12:33, etc. He wanted to put some of his money in trust for the future. Since he was not willing to do this, the workers could not accept him because he did not follow the example and commands of Jesus, Matt 11:1. He became bitter and then wrote his book. It was written out of spite and anger and is so full of that kind of spirit--I know personally the lady who wrote the 'Unnamed Church'. She never even signed the book and wrote a fictitious name. An older brother read the book and found over 1100 errors. These books are written by bitter people and those books are not the Bible." Excerpt from letter of Brother worker.
"You said, 'All you had found out about the origin and history of the fellowship has been and still is quite a shock.' So that shows you have heard untruths. So sorry you got in with those who are selling and spreading the books more and more in our state. They make money on them! Do you realize they are people who are not right, and are seeking to hinder the true people of God? I wouldn't feel safe to believe anything that is in the books, as God's people don't write and send books around. So it isn't safe to be sorting things out of them. We are so happy that God was able to raise up men whom He could reveal Himself to, and the light slowly dawned, like any babe sees. Even though 2 or 3 men did go wrong, that only makes it all the more true that the way is right from the beginning. Anytime you question, go to some of the older workers. I talked to a sister worker who was in the room when Doug Parker offered for the work. He wanted to keep money back in trust and not go by Faith. He was refused a place in the ministry so became upset and later wrote this book, "Secret Sect." Because he is a denominational preacher & has personal feelings to air, etc., the book deserves no credibility. A year or two ago, several asked Doug why he wrote the book & he said it was for money. Willis Propp could tell you more about that. - Everett Swanson, written communication with one of the "friends" on the way "out."

THE BOOKS AND THE INTERNET

The first site on the 2x2s made an appearance on the Net in October 1995.
Since then, many other sites have come on line. The OLD VOT site prints out to over 700 pages and began in mid January 1996. Linking all the 2x2 sites has enabled folks to locate all the Internet information about this large little-known sect. So many people have received help and information.
(Admin. comment: And now, many years later, you are reading on the "OLD VOT" and the "NEW VOT" that are merged together to provide you with lots of information to read. And as Sandi G. says, "Information Works!!)
INTERNET SUCCESSFUL IN REACHING THE FRIENDS!
In less than a year much has been accomplished on the Internet. There are presently three Web Sites where anyone with Internet access can go to learn all about the "Truth." Never before has there been a tool quite like this! And more and more people are learning to "surf" all the time! It is amazing how many people have access to the Net! In offices and schools and in homes. And it would seem that a lot of the friends the world over have heard that the Internet has information about the "Truth." And they *ARE* finding the sites! The information on the net is placed there by EX 2x2s and it is permanently there for all the world to read. One of the sites has pictures of the early workers. There sits William Irvine and George Walker together! Once on the Internet you need to do a search to find the 2x2 sites. Enter the correct search words and PRESTO…just like magic you will get more information about the workers and their way then one could ever imagine.

Re: The book THE SECRET SECT.
I couldn't see where the author, Doug Parker & his wife were disgruntled at all! Doug had offered for the work and prior to going in he was told by a preacher of another faith that the group (he referred to the friends as the "Cooneyites") started in Ireland. Doug was raised from a young age in the "Truth" and did not believe what they man told him but in due course he researched for himself as he wanted to know the truth. It was years and years before he finally wrote the Secret Sect. He and his wife spent a long time doing the research. You will see that the book is very well documented.
How much of "REFLECTIONS" have you read? And yes, so many of the ex-members stories share with the reader how much God means to them now!
I've read around 10 stories... yeah its just amazing to hear what these people say. And for the most part they aren't angry with members at all. They just want to help. That's so different from what the workers and others have to say about those books.
We have also heard that the workers have been referring to "that wicked internet". Actually the internet is a huge threat to them as the books have not been easy for the average member to obtain, but any of the friends with access to the internet will almost certainly make inquiry sooner or later.
You will be helped greatly by reading the books. Sometimes it will be hard to read some of the stories but overall you will be greatly helped.
I am really hanging out to get that shipment of books from RIS, and start distributing (AND READING THEM MYSELF!!!).
What encourages me is when someone who left the "Truth" years ago has an opportunity to get the books. Oft times they have suffered needlessly for years and once they read those books they realize that most of the friends felt the same all along.
The web sites have been out about a year. It is interesting that a lot of the friends have heard there is now information on the Net. We get a lot of Email directly from the sites. Usually it is from EX2x2s; folks who have left years ago and who are so interested to learn about Irvine, etc. We know that the friends are reading the sites too, but they are more reluctant to contact us.

Two books I am delighted to see on your book list are Knowing God by Jim Packer and The truth War by John McArthur.
A reading of Packer's book will give you a sound basis for good sound theology that is scriptural and God honoring.
McArthur's book, The Truth War is a very readable and relevant book outlining what Christians are up against even from those who would appear to be in evangelical.
Both of these can be highly recommended and will increase your knowledge but more importantly help you to grow spiritually and glorify God as an effective witness to His grace.
